Brown Marmorated Stink Bug: Damage, Defence, Samurai Wasp

Three things work against the brown marmorated stink bug, and none of them works alone: exclusion netting over the orchard, monitoring with aggregation pheromone traps so you know when the insect is actually present, and samurai wasp releases, which act on the eggs and pay off in the following season rather than the current one. Insecticides arrive late and cover little, because the bug moves constantly and, by the time you see the damage, it is already under the skin of the fruit.

The Italian figures show the scale. In the province of Viterbo, hazelnuts lost up to 70% of the crop, worth around 200 million euros. In Emilia-Romagna, by contrast, orchards that had dropped to zero production are bearing again.

How to identify the brown marmorated stink bug

Halyomorpha halys comes from East Asia and has been in Europe for about fifteen years. The adult is roughly a centimetre and a half across, has the shield shape typical of pentatomids, and a mottled brown pattern. The feature that separates it from native stink bugs is on the antennae: two clear pale bands on the final segments. The edge of the abdomen alternates light and dark bands.

Eggs are laid in tidy clusters on the underside of leaves, pale and barrel-shaped. Newly hatched nymphs stay massed on the egg cluster, then disperse and start feeding.

It is most often confused with the green shield bug and with Rhaphigaster nebulosa, the native mottled shield bug, which overwinters indoors in exactly the same way. Check the antennae: without the pale bands, it isn’t the one.

What damage it does, and why you see it late

The bug doesn’t eat the fruit: it pierces it and draws out the cell contents. The puncture is invisible to the naked eye, but under the skin the tissue collapses and corks over. What you get depends on when the feeding happened:

  • Early feeding, on the setting fruit: permanent deformation, the familiar dimpled pear or apple, and drop.
  • Late feeding, on formed fruit: spongy, bitter patches in the flesh that often surface only in storage, after weeks in the cold room. This is the worst case, because the fruit has already been picked, graded and paid for.
  • On hazelnut: a deformed kernel and off flavour, a defect that downgrades the lot even at low percentages.

It is polyphagous almost indiscriminately: pear, apple, peach, kiwifruit, hazelnut, soya, maize, vegetables. That is where the difficulty lies, because the insect moves from crop to crop following ripening and re-enters the block after every spray.

The cycle: where the bug is in the months that matter

Across much of the Mediterranean range it completes two generations a year. It is the second one, in high summer, that produces the numbers that end up on the invoice.

Nets and traps: what actually holds in the field

Exclusion netting is the most solid defence available today. Single-row or full-canopy, it has to be closed before the adults arrive, not after: netting put up over an already infested block shuts the insect in rather than out. The investment is heavy and amortises over several years, but it is the only measure that protects the fruit continuously, without depending on getting the timing right.

Aggregation pheromone traps do not catch enough bugs to reduce the population. They tell you when the insect is present and when pressure is rising, which is a different thing and worth more. Check them on a fixed schedule and read them as a series: a single number means nothing, the curve does.

Insecticides have a residual role. The bug is highly mobile, re-enters from the margins, and the windows of efficacy are narrow. Spraying by the calendar almost always means spending without moving the damage.

The samurai wasp: what to expect, and when

Trissolcus japonicus, the samurai wasp, is a tiny parasitoid that lays its own eggs inside the stink bug’s eggs. It is the natural enemy the bug lives alongside in its native range, which is why it does not cause there the damage it causes here.

Authorised releases in Italy are in their third year in Lazio. In Emilia-Romagna, orchards that had dropped to zero production are bearing again, and that is the most concrete sign the method is working.

Two things are worth stating plainly:

  1. It is not a treatment. The wasp acts on eggs, reduces the following generation, and works at landscape scale rather than block scale. Expecting an effect within the season of the release leads to disappointment.
  2. You cannot buy it or release it yourself. Releases are run by official services within a plan, at chosen and monitored sites. What you can usefully do is report your situation to the plant health service and avoid spraying release sites.

This defence is measured in years. Until then, it is nets and monitoring.

Where plant monitoring fits

A stem sensor does not count stink bugs: that job belongs to traps and visual sampling, and no physiological instrument replaces them.

What sap data tells you is a different, complementary thing. A tree that has lost fruit to drop, or that is carrying an unbalanced load after weeks of feeding punctures, changes its water use. Keeping the tree out of water stress through the summer, which is exactly the window when the bug does the damage, avoids stacking two problems at once.
